You can have it both ways. And more. For example, the following text
is extracted from the CDROM-L welcome message:
...
CDROM-L is the Bitnet Listserv version of alt.cdrom. You may
subscribe to CDROM-L by sending a note to listserv -at- uccvma -dot- bitnet or
listserv -at- ucop -dot- edu with the following text (the subject is
ignored):
subscribe cdrom-L <Firstname> <Lastname>
...
CDROM-L is also available in digest and indexed forms.
To get the digest form, which is sent as one message per day with
a table of contents, subscribe using the procedure given above and
then send the following note to the *Listserv* address:
set cdrom-L digest
The indexed form is a list of authors and subjects for each note
posted for the previous day, so the note sent to an index subscriber
is much shorter than the digest. There are instructions in the index
which allow one to retrieve the full text of any note in the index.
To subscribe to the index, first subscribe to CDROM-L using the procedure
given above and then send the following note to the *Listserv* address.
set cdrom-L index [omitted from original, by mistake]
If you have set your subscription to receive the digest or indexed forms
and you wish to get the individual notes again, send the following to the
*Listserv* address:
