Seems like to replicate the variation in individual glyphs you'd apply
to apply some sort of effect to the font.
Maybe look at Caslon.

what you see there using CSS only. I am not searching for a "good font"; I
have examined thousands of fonts in my day. I don't think the fonts used
then were particularly "good", but they are what Poe would have seen
his work appear in. That's what I am trying to bring the end user here:
immediacy to Poe. Call it an art site.
This was the beginning of the machine age in printing, so actually these
were not hand set. They were set in stereotype and run off a man- or
steam-powered press.
