Yes, ExtendScript is Adobe's implementation of JavaScript with specific extensions for working with files and making dialog boxes. Most JavaScript books and courses are going to focus on JavaScript in web browsers because that is where it is most commonly used. But learning the core JavaScript language will give you a head start on ExtendScript. One caveat: ExtendScript is based on an old version of JavaScript (1.5 I think) so some newer features you may encounter online and in books may not apply to ExtendScript.

Python, Perl, Ruby, and Javascript. The plus with Javascript is that it is (as I understand it and no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong) the basis for the ExtendScript used by Adobe in all of its programs, including FrameMaker.

A lot depends on where the programs are run and what they do. If you're
interested in web-based applications, then Ruby and Python are good bets,
with JavaScript part of the mix If you're interested in large
enterprise-wide applications, C# is a good bet.
Check with the developers and see what they recommend. Slashdot is a good
resource for information, too. And if you want to learn, look for Head
First books - they are generally both interesting and informative. I've
used their JavaScript and SQL books, but this one looks like s good
starting place:
