I just had an "Aha!" moment from this thread. A technical writer helps the SMEs work more efficiently by offloading documentation tasks that they would rather not do. So technical writers do more than just create documentation--they help the organization work more efficiently by enabling the billable consultants (for example) do *more* of what they do best. I need to weave this concept in to my elevator speech.Â
