Spot on. CMOS is authoritative and in my opinion correct on this issue. In the original example, the 1 L flask, other issues arise:

- What about having a space between 1 and L, or not? Both standards seem to be in use, 1L flask and 1 L flask.
--- CMOS prefers the latter.
- Isn't it "more correct" to use a lower-case L? We use m and g, for instance, not M and G.
--- No, because you risk the confusion between a 1l flask and a 11 flask.

CMOS correctly suggests that any confusing term or phrase be rewritten to eliminate ambiguity or lack of clarity. We all know how to do that, right? Well, mostly. At least sometimes.

That's correct hyphenation of a phrasal adjective (one-liter) aka compound adjective per the Chicago Manual of Style and the Oxford reference you linked to.

Other style guides may have different rules.

My employer has recently been switching us all over to Win 10 and
Office 365. I am struggling to find all of the same efficiencies I had
wit Win 2010, but that isn't why I am writing today.

What I have noticed in Word 365 is that it flags a grammar error
anywhere a hyphen might be inserted, e.g., it wants to make "Fill a 1
L beaker with xyz" into "Fill a 1-L beaker with xyz". I am a little
concerned that this would confuse people working in a laboratory
environment, where my docs are used for mixing up various compounds,
as they have not seen this before in our Procedures, as far as I can
tell.

While not incorrect, I view such hyphens as optional, based on
personal preference. There are certainly times when hyphens make
sense, since they can clarify meaning. Reference:
