Re: How important is the new IEC/IEEE 82079-1 standard?
I just got read in the tekom newsletter that the final draft of the new
IEC/IEEE 82079-1 standard is being circulated for review.

How important is this standard?
Is it:
1. Mandatory for every company that wants to work in the European
market, and likely to cause regulatory issues if the documentation is not
compliant.
Or,
2. Optional, and the only added value is that companies which comply can
brag about their high-level of documentation to potential customers, while
companies that do not will be forced to hang their heads in shame.
I thought I would glance at it and see if I could glean some sort of understanding. Not only is it "tl;dr" but anything actually important is paywalled.
Our family has seen this sort of stuff in our small corner of agriculture. We have a small farm with a few animals. We may or may not be in compliance with unknowable regulations, the gist of which is, "Get Big or Get Out!"
The saving grace is the infeasibility of universal enforcement. The standard method of compliance will likely be to append a URL to the documentation. "See <URL> for full documentation." Easier than the microtype paper in 14 languages that occasionally accompanies consumer items. The product will be obsolete before anyone can check whether the Kyrgyz version, or even the English one, actually applies to the item it supposedly describes. The brief version of the safety warning will probably be correct, generally applicable to anything that purports to move electrons about or is heavy enough to drop on your foot.
