   But if one isn't familiar with a language, it's mighty hard to
   correlate the letters, which do indeed look like symbols without
   meaning, with their table/text entries. I'm imagining trying to look at
   Hindi, Mandarin, etc. letters/"symbols" that are perfectly obvious to
   people who can read those languages, but I'd have a terrible time
   trying to tell many of those symbols apart.

     Question: Why translate the letters at all?  Effectively they are
     just symbols to link up item on screen with item in text.
     Nobody is "reading" them as text.
