Along the line of what Steven suggests, in the past, I've handled this by focusing on the task it accomplishes than the name of it: "To do <whatever the task is / what the user can do if they click it>, click the icon next to the <whatever field> " with a screen shot of the "whatever" field and the icon with a red square drawn around the icon.

I thought contemporary style said you don't refer to interface objects at all.
In some contexts I've seen it used as "browse for the file you want," suggesting that the button opens a file browser.
