Re: "via" - why often verboten ?
On the rare occasions I use "via," it's precisely to emphasize the way
something is accessed. For example, you can do certain operations on
an object in the UI but others only via the command line.
Oh yes. Of course. Of course.
People who are into hacking command lines are mavens of esoterica. They (just like some tech writers) thrive on weird words and convoluted constructions. They'll appreciate "via" and will know the difference between i.e. and e.g. They might know that viz. is a medieval abbreviation for videlicet. They are good in C and assembler. Maybe they even program in FORTH.
Know your audience.
