Generally speaking, Brian's right. I'll note that most Zip programs (including SecureZIP/Smartcrypt, which I document) now support a variety of strong encryption methods (passphrase, X.509 certificates, OpenPGP). We call the 96-bit version "traditional zip encryption," safe for family recipes and the like.

FYI...All the ways to password protect PDFs (and zips) that I'm aware of are very easy to break, if that matters.
