Did said unnamed company charge for tech support? Or was it a cost? If the latter they're being shortsighted. If the former they're still shortsighted but cunning.
Or maybe they just wanted to check the box and be able to charge lots for professional services instead of giving customers info good enough that their own developers could succeed.
