There was always a dial (although now there might not be). The "radio button" buttons were mechanical. An interlock prevented two being pressed in at the same time.

Some home radios had similar buttons.

Interesting... although its odd that programmers adopted "radio button", given that by the time computer programming became a thing, I'm pretty sure car radios had dials, not push buttons.hwr-l.com/archives
