There was always a dial (although now there might not be). The "radio button" buttons were mechanical. An interlock prevented two being pressed in at the same time.

Some home radios had similar buttons.

In 1956 WMEX at 1510 in Boston had Arnie Ginsburg.

Cars radios still have buttons.

How far back do you have to go to find a car radio with no dial and
buttons that weren't programmable? I've never seen one, even in the
cars from the 1950s that some of my friends were driving in high
school.

The Microsoft style guide says to call them "option buttons" in developer docs.

Oh! So that's where the term came from?

Interesting... although its odd that programmers adopted "radio button", given that by the time computer programming became a thing, I'm pretty sure car radios had dials, not push buttons.hwr-l.com/archives
