A little while ago, I worked for an airline writing their doc and they weren't in any hurry to make the move to electronic tablets anytime soon, even though it might be a little better to find information. The big reason was that, because of regulatory rules, they would have to have each and every tablet tested (pressure, etc.). Effectively, they would have to buy a bunch of tablets and have them tested on their own dime, and if any failed, they would not be able to get a refund. They had run a test on the failure rate of tablets (iPads actually) under the testing and found it to be somewhere around 30% or something.

Apple and Samsung need to make "toughbook" versions of their tablets.

I came across this article about weight reduction on airlines a couple of
years ago and it's stuck with me.

The idea of using iPads for technical docs is a great thing for lots of
reasons (easy search, zoomable images, etc.), but on an airplane I guess I
worry about the iPad running out of battery in times of crisis. Maybe I'm
jaded by too many iPad malfunctions...from the safety of my couch.

Here's another story for you.

This was something Sully wrote about. Tom Johnson first wrote about this in
his blog. I think also the movie shows the safety manual but I haven't seen
the movie yet.

*In the aftermath of Flight 1549, "I accepted a management pilot position,"
a promotion that means a "flexible schedule and also the opportunity to
help with safety issues." When the plane lost power, for example, First
Officer Jeff Skiles

reached for a manual that provides emergency procedures. Those manuals once
had tabbed pages that made applicable sections available instantly. Cost
cuts eliminated the tabs; Sully's book describes Skiles taking a few
seconds to find the right place.*

*Asked about this, Sully emphasizes that it's no big deal and that he wants
to make it clear he's speaking for himself and not for his employer. "US
Air is very safe," he says, his only concern "how to make it better." He
had complained about those tabs before Flight 1549.*

I remember the character grabbing some things that looked like small ring

see
xeroxed pages in a ring binder. That would have been a hoot.

Printed? Bound? Like back in the 20th century?

following the docs to accomplish something (or not!). S ...
