I'll be the first to say it, what are you trying to do?
Because my tool might not fit your needs. We all have our favorites, but
they all serve different purposes. Recommending a complex tool chain that
only exists on Linux and requires programmer support to generate output is
useless if you have a small .NET shop where everyone is going to be
contributing to the doc set. Or if you need to produce JavaHelp and the
tool I recommend doesn't produce that output. Or suggesting a tool that's
best for print output when your trying to produce an online knowledgebase.
The first step in migrating from a tool is to define your requirements.
What are you documenting? (hardware, software, API, mobile app, etc.) What
outputs (printable/online/embedded) do you want to produce? What platforms
are you working and publishing on? How large is your doc set? How many
products and writers will be using the tool? Are they professionals or
will non technical writers be contributing? Will you be localizing? Et
cetera.
Start with the requirements. Then pick the tool that most closely meets
them.
You may even find that your current tool is the right one for the job, if
the person who chose it did their homework properly
