My office is an hour drive away, so I go in when necessary or useful.
Currently that's usually one day a week, down from three or four three
years ago when I was creating the docs from scratch and needed to talk
with the engineers all the time.

A lot of the people I work with the most are in other states or
countries anyway. One old job, as the company laid people off here and
hired them elsewhere, I ended up with none of the people I worked with
being in the local office, so I stopped going in.

In California, at least, if you're an independent contractor working
on 1099, they can't stop you from working at home when there's no good
reason to go in.
