Very few architects are sole operators.  In most firms, there's a chief 
or managing architect (who could be the owner of the firm), and a bevy 
of senior and mid level staff architects, junior architects-in-training, 
plan drafters, detail drafters, landscape architects or designers (who 
do the paving and fencing as well as lay out the plantings).  Some of 
the lower level architects specialize in the design of framing, some in 
plumbing or electrical, and in the case of large developments, road 
layouts and storm and sewer drainage.  And the designers usually spend 
at least some time on site with the actual construction. It's a 
different world from designing software or widget assemblies.

Today, most architectural firms add phrasing such as "& Associates" to 
their banners, but years ago, the name of one person often branded the 
work of a veritable army of unnamed staff. One name in the signature 
block of the plans does not mean that one person designed the entire 
project.
