Office doesn't work that way. It's Microsoft after all. If you have a 32-bit
version of Office installed and try to upgrade it will insist on installing
the new version as 32-bit, even if you have 64-bit hardware. I've
experienced that myself.

Why do you need to uninstall the old one first? You should be able to
install the 64-bit Office 2016 and have both versions installed and usable
on your machine.
