I can make them read and write about advanced tools so
they at least have a concept of what they are and how they work. I'm having
them prepare a report describing the technology, software or tool,
explaining how it is used to produce documentation, and what kind of issues
writers have with the tool. They will use the archives of techwr-l as their
primary source. It isn't ideal, but it is better than nothing.

An excellent project, especially if it's assigned as, "write a white paper to convince management to invest in the necessary tools". This way your students will learn about writing white papers (which plenty of tech writers, not just marcomm types, write), learn about presenting pros & cons, learn about presenting and quantifying date (they could research the tool costs), learn all sorts of things about metrics that are applicable to tech writing, and even learn about the day-to-day life of tech writers (I'm thinking about comparing workflows, especially for doc reviews, which will expose students to how tech writers work with the rest of the team).

Not only would this be a real-world example for students, it'll provide you with data that *might* eventually convince academia to invest :-).
