For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I want to see companies do Formal Friday. Nowadays, especially in IT
companies, everyone dresses like flood survivors every day. I think there
should be one day a week when the workforce proves its capable of wearing
both socks the same color.
One place I worked years ago, they had one of the company bigwigs coming in
for meetings with us and an important client. The boss said we had to get
neatened up, and everyone was freaking out. We had a bunch of programmers
who were fresh out of college, first jobs they ever had, and they had
absolutely no clue how to dress outside the student union building. Some of
them, it was literally the first time in their lives they had ever had to
shop for their own clothing. The results looked like a real-life Mike
Meyers movie. I didn't know whether to laugh at them or cry for them.
