As with most things relating to accounting and taxes, if you try to "wing it" without help, you may well get it wrong. The "obvious" way to do something is often simply incorrect. One year I switched to quarterly filing with 1099 income, and was hit for failing to file in a previous quarter when I didn't have the quarterly income and didn't even know I was going to file quarterly at a later time. I never found out what triggered the "failure" notice, but my accountant fixed it, somehow.
