[question about tabular layout]

Searching tables styles or layouts on the Internet gets me a lot of furniture links.

Add the name Tufte to your searches and you will limit your results to items by or related to Edward Tufte, whose methods in presentation of quantitative information are legendary.

I suspect that your team is falling into the trap of making the material "easier to write" rather than "easier to read and use."

Perhaps, though, they are now viewing the material only on screens with a very wide format, so that this arrangement:

1 2 3 4
5 6 7 8

would need far less up-and-down scrolling than does this one:

1 5
2 6
3 7
4 8

Would it help to design and execute your own trials of usability? Or would that be merely barking up the wrong metaphor?
