I’ve written and read technical documentation since the early 80’s. I currently service systems that integrate PLCs.

“Backplane” is the standard terminology for what you describe. Never once have I read or heard of “backpan”.

Is the engineer a non-English native language speaker? Might be one of those terms “lost in translation”, a technical-language Mondegreen? ::

Good luck,
