If it's important to someone, ask them to choose a preferred method and don't worry about the reliability of the algorithms used by various tools. Years ago, I worked doing desktop publishing for a translation agency and it never ceased to amaze me that the woman who owned (with her husband) the agency would spend all day manually counting words in printouts of the text to be translated because she was sure the automated versions would cost her money.

Best Regards,

Mike

Does anybody have an opinion about the accuracy of various methods of counting words? I've never had any need to count words in a document, and so I'm not sure what to make of the different answers I get between say a plain text editor and Word.

Plain Text Editor:

296,810

Plain Text in Word:

300,820

PDF Converted to Word:

316,719

Is there any consensus about which is likely to be the most accurate? Is there a better method?
