I agree, and will add a couple of factors. The late '70s and early '80s saw two trends (among others) affecting college students and business: 1) the emergence of technology leading to a slimming down of middle management and general "skilled administration" positions typically populated with college graduates with liberal arts degrees; and 2) historically high student loan interest rates, which increased pressure on students, parents, and recent graduates to focus on education debt economically justified by postgraduate salary potential.
