For me, the job is 90% about learning things, and a fair portion of
the things I have to learn are professional development. Either I have
to find and learn a new tool to do something new, or I have to
document a new technology that will be useful again in the future.
The one bit of professional development I got through the STC was in I
think the mid-90s, in the basement of the old London Wine Bar in SF,
when they got someone to give a presentation on undocumented internals
of WebWorks or RoboHelp. But today I could find that sort of thing on
the web without leaving my desk.

As long as tech writers/communicators continue to complain about co-workers lacking respect for what we do, we need an organization that will fight for respect (STC doesn't do enough of that, IMHO, but that's a result of me being in a minority in the organization).
