But there is an investment. All of you invested time to find your answers, and you have no way of knowing whether you could have found the same answers in a well-written document in the same or less time than it took to carry on a discussion in a user forum. For your particular example, you probably could have gotten everything you needed from a single article in a computer magazine (last month's Maximum PC had a step-by-step how-to article for building your own gaming system, for example).
