My drive is about 60 miles, takes me about an hour.
3. How long is your work day?
Official hours are 9 - 5.30, due to working with dev teams in other timezones my contract states 8 - 4.30. With flexitime I aim to work 7.45 - 4.15.

--I typically wake up by 5:45 am.
2. If you drive to an office, how many miles is your commute?
--My drive is 40 miles each way. It takes me approx. 45 minutes to get to
work. It's not a bad commute. I'm blessed.
3. How long is your work day?
--Our official hours are 8:30 to 5:30. I just recently reduced from 40
hrs/wk to 35hrs/wk. I work from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and it's glorious!

I'm completely freelance these days, working from home. No commute! Once
every few weeks I may have to physically attend a meeting for one client;
it's an aggressive hour-plus drive, for which I charge them for each way (I
could otherwise be billing another client, right?).
I work flex hours, depending on clients' deadlines. I rarely work an
eight-hour day, but often come close.
This morning I was at it shortly after 5:00 AM, as one client is having an
open house today and really wants a completed quick installation/setup
guide for a new product offering. I only got the remaining inputs last
night.

As a night owl with a lifetime of sleep issues, getting up any earlier than 7:30 is difficult; 4 am is obscene... I'd just die.
I'm out the door by 8; it's a short walk with a pitstop for takeout coffee and 45 minutes on the subway to get to work. I often get off the subway halfway and stroll home. When the weather is nice, I can get here slightly faster if I ride my bike.
I was recently interviewed for a job that sounded pretty much like my dream job; but the business was located in the middle of a god-forsaken industrial park and would have meant I'd have to buy a car and/or spend an hour and a half on public transit each way to spend my day isolated in the boonies. Increasing the intensity, length, and misery of my daily commute and the impact that would have on my overall quality of life was a dealbreaker.
There's a fair amount of flexibility in start and end times in my office. As long as I meet my deadlines and put in 37.5 hours a week, nobody bats an eye if I occasionally roll in at 10 or leave early to attend to personal business.
I feel very fortunate in that regard.

I ordered a quiet pro from Matias, and got the Mac version. I discovered, to my chagrin that't wife wanted the PC version. Long story about using a powered KVM switch to drive a Mac and Windows box behind the switch.
Matias customer support was responsive and helpful, and I got the replacement in short order.

*THE COMMUTE FROM HELL*
Several years ago I had a seven-month contract in Oakland; I live 40
minutes NE of Sacramento. I'd get up at 4:00 AM and quickly get my act
together, then drive 30 minutes to Roseville. There I'd hop an Amtrak bus
for Sacramento and then hop on the commuter train (hoping it wasn't going
to arrive late that morning). I quickly learned how long I could sleep
onboard, waking at just the right time to have a cuppa before transferring
to BART in Richmond for the remaining portion of the commute.
An eye mask and over-the-ear audio headset was an integral part of that
operation.
Come 4:45 PM, the routine was reversed; dinner was at 8:30 and then
*promptly* to bed.
This amounted to 7 hours/day commuting. Wednesdays I would stay overnight
in Palo Alto with my brother and his wife; this reprieve helped save what
was left of my (in)sanity. (My wife was thankful, too.)
Every couple of weeks a "leaper" would mess up the train commute, requiring
three separate investigations (Union Pacific, Amtrak, local police) while
we sat there watching the time pass.

1. When does everyone get up in the morning for work? -- I get up
somewhere between 8:30 and 9:00. (I am NOT a morning person.)
2. If you drive to an office, how many miles is your commute? -- 14 miles
one way. It takes about 20-30 minutes morning and afternoon. I don't have
to be physically present at all but I usually come in for easy access to
SMEs.
3. How long is your work day? -- I typically work 10 to 6, Monday through
Friday, though I find myself doing a lot of work on weekends and in the wee
hours of the morning. I can set my own hours.

To answer these questions we need to split this into the following categories:
* "Days I have to drop the kids at school & wife at work" (DKW, about 90% of the time)
* "Days it is just me" (DJM)
* "Days with Public Health Emergencies" (PHE)

DKW: Up by 5:00 a.m. Dressed & ready to leave by 6:00 a.m., then start working on the kids (dressing, breakfast, lunches etc.) leave the house by 7:30.
DJM: All of the above, but leave the house at 8:10 a.m.
PHE: Whenever the phone rings.

DWK: 15 miles, 31 minutes
DJM: 4 miles, 10 minutes
PHE: Who know's? The office could be 10 minutes away or hundreds of miles -- I go where I am sent.

DKW/DJM: Typically 8:30-4:30 (37.5 hour week), but it's quite flexible as long as you get 7.5hrs in every day. On call 24x7 to support applications (but that comes with an iPhone, iPad, mifi card and unlimited data).
PHE: On call for these 24x7, and work 24x7 whenever there is a public health emergency. And in case you are wondering, I don't necessarily do technical writing or training during these events. Our whole team is cross trained on roles for events and you do whatever is necessary, where ever it is required.

The PHE aspect of your life is interesting Gregory. What's your role? Have
you learned anything about preps for the new respiratory infection and the
possibility of an Ebola outbreak (considering international air travel, it
seems like we're going to see at least a few cases?)?
On a related note, I just saw/signed a petition for One.org urging action
on medical help to Ebola stricken countries. If anyone is interested, email
me and I'll forward. Not sure I could forward to the list.

Anywhere from 6:00 - 7:30 (Depends on if I'm going to the gym)
Email from home in the morning til about 9-9:30, arrive at office 10-1030,
stay til 530-645
Meetings with other side of the world start at 9:30 PM, sometimes till
midnight
Adjust schedule based on whether or not there were meetings and length of
time spent on meetings
WFH one day per week, when I usually sleep til 8:30, transition to living
room and work 9-6 ish
We have a 50 hour work week, so time is a bit flexible as far as what's
done in office/at home. So really, I have no straight answer for you :)

** I have been arising at 3:30 a.m. I shower, feed the pets, prepare and eat breakfast and prepare and pack my lunch, perhaps a little time to read the newspaper while I await my carpool.

** My commute is 87 miles each way.

City right near the San Mateo Bridge.

This August was 10 years for me. I could move closer but my son and family are still there and also my wifes kids w/families are there. I?ve been a vol. firefighter for that area since 1982. I have roots.

1. When does everyone get up in the morning for work?
7-7:30am, begrudgingly...
2. If you drive to an office, how many miles is your commute?
12 miles each way -- State Hwy eastbound I have Mt Hood in front of me and the Columbia River on my right in the morning, and there is no commuter traffic. It's gorgeous every day. (And oddly, there are no lights or stop signs between my driveway and my workplace.)
3. How long is your work day?
8:30-5:00, but very flexible as long as it adds up to 40/wk.

1. When does everyone get up in the morning for work?
I get up anywhere between 7 and 8. Today was 8:20 because I didn't sleep
last night and I still got to work earlier than usual somehow... a commute
miracle!
2. If you drive to an office, how many miles is your commute?
17 miles. SoCal traffic means I might be driving for 15 minutes or 45, but
I get to look at pretty flowers and the Pacific Ocean while I wait in
traffic, so that's ok with me.
3. How long is your work day?
I usually work about 8 hours a day, with my hours depending on when I
arrive at work (depending on that pesky traffic) but it's quite flexible.
It will be longer hours when we approach product release; it's sometimes
shorter in the summer. As others have said, it's nice that I can come in a
little late or leave a little early if I have to... as long as I get my
work done, everyone is happy.

When I work from home, my commute is 15 seconds.
But since the client wants me onsite, the alarm wakes me up at 7:30am.
I've got a 33 mile commute from Glendale Heights to Deerfield, so it's 60 to
75 minutes in the morning rush and 90 minutes in the evening rush. If the
highway is packed, then it's two hours each way using the local roads.
Normal start is between 8:00am to 9:00am with an evening end time around
6:00pm.

I was wondering:
1. When does everyone get up in the morning for work?
--I have been arising at 4 a.m.
2. If you drive to an office, how many miles is your commute?
--My drive is 20 miles to and from. It takes me an hour and 20 minutes to
get home after Labor Day. Less than an hour during the summer.
3. How long is your work day?
--Our official hours are 8:30 to 5:30. I work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
