You need to talk to your company's legal staff about this, or contact the
publication to determine what their requirements are for you to use
materials published by them. You may be required to contact the original
authors......especially if you are using someone else's material in your
product. I'm not a lawyer, but I do believe what you intend to do is
different from writing an article and using quotes from external sources,
which require attribution.

I strongly recommend investigating your company/client's legal SOP for this.
We've all worked in organizations with varying policies.

I'm writing a manual that provides a fair amount of context material. For
some of this material, I'm hoping to use excerpts from a published
scientific book (quite well known in the field) which I assume is
copyrighted material. If I provide a footnote and full attribution to the
book and publisher, does that cover me legally? Or will I need to approval
from the publisher to quote the book?
