>From my experience, tech writing is a less stressful job than either the Army or early childhood day care. But having said that, stress is *always* self-induced.

It really depends on the project. I've been both a developer and a technical writer. I worked on a couple multi-year government-mandated writing projects with international visibility, replete with reluctant SMEs, tool issues, a Fortune 500 CEO checking in regularly, deadlines, occasional reports on our project's progress in the New York Times, and regularly scheduled weekly all-nighters that were far more stressful than most of my dev. gigs. So it's important to keep in mind that there are exceptions to every rule. But overall, most writing projects in which I've been involved leave me feeling pretty comfortable in terms of job stress or lack thereof, and this is one of the reasons I enjoy the field.
