The sense I get (or at least, that I WAS getting before tablets and mobile devices came along) was that after a period of "flavor of the month, change for change's sake" "innovations," designers were finally settling in on a set of UI building blocks based on how people actually used UIs rather than on what was the "latest, greatest and up-to-datest."

Now, if only UI designers would get it through their skulls that desktop users with 27" monitors don't want to have to spend all their time wiping greasy fingerprints off their screens, and don't want UI's that can't display more than two working programs at the same time...
