I'd say tech writing is still very relevant, but I find I write different things now. When I started, I wrote NEW manuals from scratch for large new software programs.

Now I update existing doc sets, for programs that have been around for years. And most of my work doesn't involve manuals at all--it's small help systems, marketing materials, quick ref guides, requirements, product inserts, system messages, etc, etc.

Still plenty of writing, but I miss the books. And I miss the luxury of being given a YEAR to write one :).
