Well, first thought was that it's a conflict between global and local styles but it's been a long time since I've done this and haven't worked in HTML5/CSS3.

But as I recall, for example you might have defined the superscript in a way that applied it within a p tag but not within a ul tag. There were some nesting issues.

It's hard to tell without seeing the code, and obviously it could be many things, but I thought I'd pitch the "field trauma" solution that I would go for first, if I were in a rush.
