I thought that SSDs would solve that problem - with no moving parts, they are orders of magnitude more rugged.
However, they are fragile in other ways. I recently read - I think it was on ZDnet - that SSDs can corrupt data if they experience power irregularities.

Next, we'll have quantum storage. When asked, it will tell you what you put into it until, one day, Schroedinger's cat shows up alive, and all quantum bets are off.

:-)

Meanwhile, I'd talked the wife into having offsite storage, and so as part of our weekly shopping trip, we stop at the bank to put a 1TB external drive into our safe deposit box, and take out the oldest one to go back into the rotation.

She rarely has more than a few dozen new files, and maybe a couple of hundred pre-existing files that got touched in the past month, so every backup is an overlapping incremental, leapfrog affair, and not a full-on new backup of her system. That is, if she backs up today, it's to a drive that contains the state of her business a month ago. And there are three or four drives in the lockup with progressively more recent backups.

I use multiple external drives at home to store my photography and technical writing business material, and I have a couple of portable HDs for when I travel. I use Dropbox to send large files to printers or tw customers, but that is about the extent of my cloud used at this moment. I may expand in the future, but it depends on the contract (between them now). However, I also agree with Gene....you need to be careful carrying around external drives. If you drop them, they may experience a catastrophic crash....and 3 TB is a lot of data to loose.

All the talk about online storage has me curious - does anyone use a portable external hard drive *instead* of online storage, like Dropbox? I was just @ Best Buy and it seems like external hard drives are coming down in price. There's a 3 TB external hard drive for $159. Does anyone use multiple drives like that instead of Dropbox?
