ETAOIN SHRDLU was the order of alpha keys on a Linotype typesetting keyboard. That letter sequence actually appeared twice, once for lower-case and once for caps. The order is approximately the order of use frequency in English text. The odd keyboard is the reason why "Linotype operator" was a different (and usually higher paid) job description from "typist".
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETAOIN_SHRDLU for a photo of a Linotype keyboard.
