If I think that spaces were used for formatting, I will generally search for multiple spaces and turn them into tabs.
Or maybe just inspect it the first pass.
Then search for two tabs and replace with one,
etc.

two spaces, and replace with one.
Works in any version of Word -- and any other word processor I can think
of. Just remember to run it multiple times in case there are instances of
three, four, or more spaces. Run it until Words tells you the Find string
wasn't found.
