Telecommuting still seems to be a privilege, especially among full-time staff, and a rare one at that.

I am allowed to work from home one day a week, and I am grateful for it.

Yup, and those are the ones who screw it up for the rest of us! I've been a telecommuting employee, and I've been an independent contractor. They're definitely not the same thing. When I get an employee or consulting position with a company that allows me to telecommute, I feel a lot of responsibility to return calls and emails in a timely manner, answer the phone as if it was ringing in my cubicle, and be in front of my computer just as I would be if I was in the office. I have had occasion, however, to wish that other people felt similarly accountable, and I always want to shake them vigorously by the shoulders.
