TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
You might want to take a look at the Hans van der Meij dissertation that Steve Janoff shared. Among other things, we find that, "For learning, the full screen captures manual and the textual manual were significantly better than the partial screen captures manual"; and, " The use of full screen captures
is preferable to partial ones."
>From Steve:
Hans van der Meij, John Carroll's collaborator on some early minimalist papers (and books?), did some later work on screen captures and I think he also mentored the doctoral student who specialized in this (at University of Twente), Mark Gellevij.

Subject: RE: Screen captures
I probably should add that I frequently clip the screen to show only the relevant part, especially if it's the menu bar. If the field is somewhere in the middle of the screen I keep the screen intact from the top to the field, to help users get their bearings.
