I was let go today from my job. I was told I do not meet the companies

That could mean anything, like you wouldn't work for free or somebody had a friend or family member that needed your job.

The real question? Should I see what is out there and see what I can
do? Or should I just start working as an independent contractor? I
have never done that before and I am not sure how I should go about it?

Why would you need to choose only one option? If you are interested in IC, then build your profile and portfolio, talk to people you worked with before to get references and to network, look into tax and liability issues, *and* continue to look for regular employment.

Any ideas? How bad? How hard? How do I get out and do it? Any books?
Any guidance is appreciated.

IC is a full-time job that you need to run as a business, even when you have no income from it. There are financial and legal considerations to determine whether you should be a W-2 employee working with an agency, a 1099 sole proprietor securing your own employment, or a B2B corporation.

If you work on your own without a recruiter, then you need to learn about getting an appropriate deposit before working, bracing for the net 30-45 large companies and government pay, and how to prepare for clients who do not pay.

You can start with a small job to see what it /feels/ like to work on your own and you can look here for ideas http://www.freelancewriting.com/.

There are plenty of books but the Well Fed Writer series is exceptional. http://wellfedwriter.com/
