Unemployment compensation and self-employment (was Re: Laid Off)
You can get compensated if you make less than your benefits, but not if you are self-employed because you are not paying the unemployment tax. You can choose to do this if you consider yourself a small company.

I think they found out because I was dumb/honest enough to ask about how you could work and bring in some income, but still get unemployment. There's a rule in there somewhere about that.

The PA Web site says "You are not eligible to receive benefits if you have fewer than 16 credit weeks in the base year." And in your base year you worked for 6 months (~26 weeks) so you should be eligible for something. I do not think the intention is that you had to work for 15 consecutive months. You will just get less.
I worked for the Oregon Employment Dept and that is how it worked there. Here in PA, I almost had a claim turned down because I worked for 2 months as a 1099 contractor. But I appealed and got the compensation.
How the heck would they know you printed business cards?
Robert,
I'll have to wait a week or so to try since I am being paid through this
week. A couple of years ago when I was on it they were all pissy, "You
aren't even eligible yet" and then when my unemployment was about to run
out they turned me in to investigate whether to make me pay back $1,100
of my unemployment just because I'd had business cards printed trying to
just do something in anticipation of my unemployment running out.

I think you might be misreading the eligibility requirements. I'd file
a claim. Worst case they reject it.
