That other 80% won't turn out to be junk either. My understanding is that
they found 18% of non-protein coding genes were building components for the
2% of protein-coding genes. It's a reasonable hypothesis from there that
some large percent of the remainder is doing some regulatory job on that
18% too.
The complexity has to step down till you get to some basic level where
genetic random behaviour is large enough to produce order, i.e., in simple
terms, 80% is regulating the 18% which is regulating the 2% and of course
we know that 2% is regulating more complex structures: cells, which are
regulating organs, which are regulating homeostatic systems, which are
regulating organismsâ).
