An offline discussion alerted me that my post below wasn't clear enough.
I wasn't talking about businesses that are starving for customers. I was
talking about tech writing jobs in organizations that don't *need*
customers.

Well, since you asked... Alissa Martine wrote, "Marketers are the life
blood of the business and the success or failure. We can create
marketing communication material across all the various communication
channels imagined - talk about what the product is who should purchase
your product, why they should purchase/use it, when it will be
beneficial in their life and how they can obtain it and use it. However,
if there is no customer to talk to and benefit from the product, it is a
waste. "

There are plenty of tech writing jobs in places where there's no
customer to be marketed to.

... This week's poll asks whether you believe technical communicators or
marketers have better career prospects

areer-prospects/>. It may be a case of the grass is always greener
somewhere else, or there may be some real trends hidden among the votes.
So far the results have been about evenly split, and we'd sure like to
hear from folks in both camps on why they feel the way they do...
