How long did it take to write the 1,000 page document? Was the ROI really better than the cost of what you suppose it would take someone to get up to speed without the doc? How did you organize a 1,000 page document so that it would be usable to a newb? If I walked into a job that required 1,000 pages of orientation documentation, I'd have serious misgivings about either the job or how the previous writer did the job.

I wrote a 1000 page document that explained how to do my job. I went through a situation in 2010 where on Wednesday night, my co-worker was there when I left work, and on Thursday AM, we were all called into the same room to learn she had been riding her bike Wednesday night and been struck by a truck. She died later that day. Don't take the "if I'm hit by a truck"
argument lightly.
