Am I the only one who is tired of seeing "iconic" used to describe anything that is even slightly recognizable?

Neat. For the very few of us who need to be reminded, there is also Paul Brians' indispensable book:

Note to the pedantic: I have used the plural possessive form for his name that Professor Brians himself chooses. Strunk and White would prefer "Brians's" but few others now agree. He says, "Some styles call for the extra S, some don't. I was forced by the publisher of my second book to follow this rule and I swore I would never do it again. I think it's ugly."

Gluttons for this sort of stuff easily fall prey to H. L. Mencken's work, "The American Language" and its two Supplements. It's now about 90 years old, the Supplements of course a bit younger, but totally engrossing.
