What's the easiest way to get a photo knockout (mask) of a device that was
photographed against a backdrop?

I've tried Photoshop's L-A-B-O-R-I-O-U-S and inaccurate method; it doesn't
float my boat. I've taken to using the fine vector cutout control in Gimp,
it's also painstakingly slow when cutting out irregularly-shaped objects.

Know of a slick tool... most preferably open source or freeware?
