Except for the "i" part, you don't need to imagine.
Pen/stylus devices that capture position and movement
data when the user writes on paper (or pretends to)
have been around for years.

But then, as implied in the original message from Phil,
Apple has never been above appropriating pre-existing
technology, slapping an "i" in front, and trumpeting
it as their revolutionary advance in... whatever.
