Right. And here's a quiz, once a writer uses the correct case an punctuation in the abbreviation, what punctuation, if any, follows the abbreviation? When I studied technical writing 20 years ago, the instructor had some rules about case that I do not remember, but she also had a rule about when punctuation follows and whether that punctuation should be a comma or a colon.

And some "yikes" (because of conflicting rules) explanations follow.

If we follow the rules of case and punctuation for i.e. and e.g., do those rules stay the same when the abbreviations are replaced with appropriate English terms?
