With any job I am hiring for, I go through the resumes and put them in stacks of qualified, maybe qualified, and not qualified. Out of the qualifieds, I select 5 or so of the top candidates, and then call them on the phone. Often, I will also have someone else who has a vested interest go through the qualified stack and pick their top 5.

You can screen out a lot of people with an informal job interview on the phone. It really helps me to narrow down who I want to bring in.

I'm evaluating resumes for a technical writing& content strategy

candidates in an interview, but I'm not sure how to decide based on
their resume who I should follow up with.

Is it appropriate to ask for writing samples before an interview? Are
there particular assets or red flags I should be looking for in a
resume? Any background research I should conduct?

Thanks!
