Certification was surely discussed thoroughly last year in this forum. People have it right: if you're interested in learning about technical communication, there are a number of physically located and online certificate courses available (including some from STC). I am not allowed to endorse any of them, but other posters have named some fine ones.

Once you have gotten your certificate and you have some experience under your belt, if you want to get—and then provide to the world—assurance of what you can do, then go to the URL below.
