The stats sound about right to me. With fewer tech writer jobs people will leave tech writing. And the tech writer jobs that are available are usually not, in my experience, as reliant on traditional documentation tools (FM, online help, Acrobat).

It would be interesting to see the numbers for, say, wikis, camtasia, business analysis, training, etc.

XML has declined not because of tech writers per se but because it's become less popular in tech in general. Less verbose formats are becoming far more popular, especially amongst the sort of aggressive change-is-good top-teir programmers who use linkedin a lot.
