Credibility is "lent" because there is always dependency.

A makes B more credible.
A is subsequently found to be false.
B loses the added credibility imparted to it by A.

If discrediting A will not reduce B's credibility, then you could say that
A "gave" credibility to B, when when does that ever happen?
